Help & FAQ

Getting started

Get the app: App Store or Google Play. Free to try, risk-free with a trial.

Then open Settings and watch the onboarding stories at the top. They show every feature in action, which is faster than reading this page.

What nag does differently

Other reminder apps notify you once and give up. If the reminder arrives at a bad moment, it is gone. nag keeps going until you mark the thing done.

That is the whole idea, and it is why nag deliberately has no lists, tags, categories or projects. It does one job.

Who uses it

One-time things you must not forget: prepare documents for an appointment, buy 2l milk, get the tyres changed, send that letter. Recurring things: medication, vitamins, drinking water, bills at the end of the month.

A large part of our users have ADHD. The reason they give us is always the same: a single notification gets ignored, a persistent one does not.

As someone with ADHD I quickly forget the reminders that pop up on my phone. Using this app has really helped me when it comes to remembering to do the tasks I set for myself.

— Damien Bird

If I have to do it I need to be bugged about it until I actually commit to doing it. I use nag for those tasks, whether it be cancelling a doctor’s appointment so I don’t get charged a fee or calling a prospective client back.

Reminders, recurrences and sounds

What recurrences can I set?

Hourly, daily, weekly, monthly and yearly, each with an interval, so every 3 hours or every 2 weeks work too. On top of that:

Can I create a reminder without a due date?

No. Every reminder in nag needs a due time. Without one there is nothing to nag you about, and nag would be a list app.

Can I set an alert before the due time?

Not as a separate pre-alert. Think of the nag reminder as the pre-alert itself: instead of “Meeting” at 4pm with a warning at 3pm, create “Prepare for meeting” at 3pm.

Can I change the notification sounds?

Yes. Several built-in sounds, from short and unobtrusive to genuinely irritating. You can set a default for reminders, a default for timers, and a different sound for one specific reminder. Custom sound files are not supported.

Does sound work when the phone is silent?

No, you get vibration only. Unlike the system Clock app, a third-party app cannot override the silent switch while it is not running.

Does nag work offline?

Yes. Reminders are scheduled on the device. No internet needed to receive them.

Devices and permissions

Which devices are supported?

Not sure about your version? Just try to install nag. If your device is too old, the store tells you.

What permissions does nag need?

Two things. Permission to send notifications, and on Android permission to keep working while the system tries to put the app to sleep. Without the second one, Android stops nag after a few hours of not opening it and your reminders go quiet.

Subscription, cancelling and refunds

How do I cancel?

iPhone: Settings app → tap your name → Subscriptions → nag → Cancel Subscription. Or go straight to apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions.

Android: Google Play Store → menu → Subscriptions → nag → Cancel subscription.

I cancelled and can still use nag

That is correct. You keep access until the current period ends, which is the day the next payment would have been taken. You will not be charged again.

How do I get a refund?

Apple and Google handle all billing, we never see your card, so the refund has to come from them.

Apple: reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, pick the nag purchase, request a refund.

Google: Google Play → “Returns and refunds” help page → Apps, games & in-app purchases → Submit a refund request online.

Where do I see my subscription status?

iPhone: Settings → your name → Subscriptions. Android: Google Play → menu → Subscriptions. If nag is not listed, you have no active subscription or trial.

Privacy and security

Do you sell any data?

Never have, don’t, never will. We make apps, we don’t sell data. That is one reason nag is a paid subscription: if the product is free, you are the product.

Is nag GDPR compliant?

Yes, since 1 October 2020. Your reminders are encrypted in transit and at rest. The full detail is in the Privacy Policy, including every third-party service we use.

How do I report a security vulnerability?

Use Settings → Support & Contact in the app and start your message with SECURITY, so it jumps the queue. We read every one.

Reminders not arriving

This is the question we get most, and on Android it is almost always the same cause.

Android: battery and power optimisation

Every Android device ships with power optimisation switched on, and every manufacturer implements it differently. It can stop a background app from firing alarms. nag has several safeguards, but we cannot override the system. In the app under Settings you will find the exact steps for your device.

If you also run a separate battery saver app, add nag as an exception there. Otherwise it kills nag, nag restarts, and that loop costs more battery than nag ever would.

iPhone: notification settings and Focus

Check that notifications are allowed for nag in the Settings app, and that a Focus mode or Do Not Disturb is not filtering it out. In Low Power Mode iOS may delay background work.

The app freezes or crashes

Reinstall it. Your reminders come back from your account. On Android, clear the app data first under Settings → Apps → nag → Clear data.

Still stuck?

Write to us from inside the app: Settings → Support & Contact. You can attach a voice message and a photo, which usually saves a round of questions.

Describe what happened as specifically as you can. We answer every message, though we may be in a different time zone than you. Every piece of feedback is useful to us, including the annoyed ones.

nag keeps reminding you until it is actually done.
